SignHealth Uganda

In rural Uganda, children born with hearing impairments are typically considered a bad omen and face exclusion and discrimination. With the support of British charity Signal, SignHealth Uganda has been working hard to change local people’s perceptions of deafness and also to fund medical help and the provision of hearing aids and other tools to enhance the day-to-day experiences of those affected.

Daylin, our South Africa-based photographer, found his time with SignHealth’s energetic beneficiaries and staff tremendously uplifting. His visual narratives include documentation of how volunteers act out dramatisations to help combat stigma, and how teachers trained in working with hearing impaired children work in classrooms. As a significant value addition, Daylin also ran a training day on visual storytelling using basic digital cameras and mobile phones for the organisation’s staff.

  • CAPTION: Juliet, who lives with a hearing impairment, cleans up her family home before preparing for school in the morning. Economic factors that force children like Juliet and their families to sleep on the floor and function without running water can exacerbate hearing impairment thanks to the poor personal hygiene that’s hard to avoid under these circumstances. SignHealth Uganda has helped Juliet by providing her with medical treatment to improve her hearing. LOCATION: Butenga Village, near Masaka City, Bukomansimbi District, Central Region, Uganda. INDIVIDUAL(S) PHOTOGRAPHED: Juliet Nassuna.

SignHealth Uganda assists parents in understanding the nature of hearing impairment, which is traditionally seen as a bad omen on the family, and helps them to realise that hearing impaired children are still capable of leading normal, happy lives both at home and at school. The organisation has also helped Juliet by providing her with medical treatment to improve her hearing. LOCATION: Butenga Village, near Masaka City, Bukomansimbi District, Central Region, Uganda. • CAPTION: Juliet walks to school along a dirt road, barefoot. Her destination is not too far from her home, only a kilometre or two; many of her classmates have to walk far greater distances for their education. The lack of shoes can lead to hygiene issues, because families frequently sleep on the same floors on which they walk, leading in turn to objects becoming lodged in the ear and to ear infections. • CAPTION: Juliet is an active participant in her class. Since being screened by SignHealth Uganda and having her hearing impairment detected and treated, her academic progress has improved and she has become more confident and involved in classroom activities. She answers questions readily, and no longer cranes her neck in order to hear through her stronger ear. Outside of school, she also works among the wider community in Lukaya, providing support to parents and helping to increase awareness.
